Apologizes for not meeting Welch. Explains that on the way to Welch's house, he was persuaded to attend the opera: "Mr Lincoln told me that he was going to the opera... As I was the only one of his Army friends present I felt bound to do so-" Written on Astor House, Stetson & Company, New York stationery. Marked "Private" under docket.
