Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of a three-story building in Vicksburg, MS. The Mississippi River can be seen in the background beyond the rest of the city. Title taken from inscription on recto. Stamp of "French & Co., photographers, Vicksburg, Miss." Men posed outside the building and someone standing in the left most bottom window. The building was constructed in 1853 and used as a hospital until 1873 (taken over by the Marines after the end of the siege in 1863). Demolished in 1892. Print is mounted at an angle to the backing material.
