Title taken from text and penciled inscriptions on recto. Pencil inscription continues: "Siege of Petersburg." Photograph on recto shows a pontoon bridge with soldiers sitting in a few of the pontoons about mid-way across the bridge. The bridge crosses the James River, VA. Two images on verso of mount. Top image on verso depicts engineers constructing a wooden hanging bridge. Fortifications are clearly visible in the background. A light artillery gun and caisson rest on the bridge behind the men on the bridge. An officer looks on from the opposite bank with a small girl sitting next to him. The bottom image shows engineers carrying ladders across the same bridge, earlier in construction. constructed of woven materials. In both images, the soldier's uniforms are not standard but consist of dark blue trousers with a broad [red] stripe running down the outer seams, a ten button front shell jacket with epaulettes, and a Prussian-looking round cap ["Mutz"] that has a [red] stripe ringing the bottom.
