A man in civilian dress stands in the trench supported by logs and support beams. Inscription on top of image in Fay's handwriting: "Earthworks in front of Petersburg. Federal lines at Fort Norton. P.46." The numbers "1069" and "388" do not appear in this image, that part has been trimmed off. There is a notation of "1069" written in the lower left corner of the image. Formerly part of H.W. Fay's ("Keeper of Lincoln's Tomb") scrapbook. Idenitcal image can be seen in .607.
