Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Ink inscription on recto "Gen Sherman." Photographers imprint on verso: "Whipple, 297 Washington Street, Boston. These Negatives are preserved for years with great care. Photographs can be made from them like this, or enlarged to Cabinet or Life Size finished like Oil Paintings, or in the style of Crayon Drawings."
