Detailed report by General Stonewall Jackson describing the events of the First Battle of Winchester, 25 May 1862. Signed by H. L. Clay, Assistant Adjutant General. Transmitted to Brigadier General Robert Hall Chilton, Robert E. Lee's Assistant Adjutant and Inspector General. A separate page of dockets indicates that this report was forwarded by Chilton 18 April 1863 (possibly to Congress, which is written in pencil below this docket). John Withers, Assistant Adjutant General, marks this report as official 18 May 1863. Clay dockets, stating that the report was forwarded to Secretary of War James A. Seddon 18 May 1863. Of the battle, Jackson reports "Whilst I have had to speak of some of our troops in disparaging terms; yet it is my gratifying privilege to say of the main body of the Army- that its officers and men acted in a manner worthy of the great cause for which they were contending: And to add that so far as my knowledge extends, the battle of Winchester was on one part, a battle without a straggler." Written from Headquarters Second Corps, Army of Virginia.
