Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Image of Union Arch across Cabin John Creek in wintertime. A few men stand down below the structure beside a pile of logs and a wood cabin. The arch forms a part of the aqueduct that bears water to Washington, D.C. The arch is designated a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. The title and subtitle are pasted below the image. The subtitle reads, "Built by General M. C. Meigs. Span of 220 ft."
