At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Tribute to the Memory of Rev. James Huckins" memoralizes his death and includes his biography. An article outlines several "Beautiful Passages" from the scriptures. "Yankee Heresy" accuses the Union for abandoning religion and worshipping Lucifer. A didactic article titled "Work for All" preaches the importance of work, especially in times of war. "Army Items" on page 3 lists revivals in different armies and brigades. "Notes on the Times" provides updates on Charleston and the shelling of Fort Sumter with 7700 shells amongst other items.

The purpose of this journal, according to its first issue, is the advancement of the Baptist denomination in both intelligence and piety, while giving support to the Confederacy. Thousands of copies were distributed to soldiers.
