Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Gove enlisted as a musician 20 Aug 1861. He served in Company E. He was mustered out 20 July 1865. Diary includes siege of Charleston, South Carolina, and capture of Fort Wagner. With ownership stamp at the end of the diary "C. H Gove, Co. E 3d NHV." Rebound in modern cloth.
