Jesse is getting better and his shoulder only hurts occasionally. He thinks "the girls will soon think different after the soldiers" return and if there are not enough, "two or three can take one in partnership." Joseph has not been well and is only 105 pounds. Jesse got into a fight with one of the many secessionists in town and was fined $1.50 but has no money to pay.
