Grant, Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army responds to President Lincoln's letter of 12 September (refer to GLC07084.01). Writes "It has been my intention for a week...to see Sheridan and arrange what was necessary to enable him to start Early out of the valley."
General Philip Henry Sheridan led the Valley Campaign in Virginia against Confederate General Jubal Anderson Early August-October 1864.

It has been my intention for a week back to start tomorrow, or the day following, to see Sheridan and arrange what was necessary to enable him to start Early out of the Valley. It seems to me it can be successfully done.
