Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Inscribed in the wallet is "R.B. Winder Captain and A.Q.M. C.S.A [Assistant Quarter Master Confederate States of America]." Accompanied by three pieces of Confederate currency of the following denominations: $1, $10 and 20 bill (see GLC07271.07.02-.04).

Major Richard Bayly Winder served as Quartermaster throughout the Civil War. He was a cousin of Gen. John H. Winder and was implicated in the mistreatment of prisoners at Andersonville Prison.
