Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Refers to a letter from Thomas Jefferson to Tristam Dalton, GLC07670.01. Regrets that years ago he tore off the address which had a free frank of Jefferson at the request of a friend who wanted the autograph. Identifies the recipient of that letter (GLC07670.01) as Dalton.

Ford was an American historian and novelist.
