Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He writes that he answered an ad form a lady asking to hear from soldiers. He wrote in and she calls him her "Darling Soldier Boy," and they have promised to exchange photographs. He warns Richard not to tell Miss Annie. Also tells the story of how the safe was stolen and how he saw the man who did it.
