Describes trying to remember the faces of family members since he has not been home for so long. Reports that the regiment is idle at present, and that the army of Northern Virginia is gaining its strength back because the absentee and sick are returning. They are prepared for another campaign but the Federals have withdrawn toward Washington at the present. Remarks that they are encouraged that Charleston is still holding. Discusses traitors negatively, what life will be like for the wealthy after the war, and clothing and fashion. Gives love to everyone at home. McLeod is the daughter of Charles' half brother William Ferguson Hutson. Hutson was a Corporal, 1st South Carolina Infantry, during the Civil War.
