Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Seige of Vicksburg" dated 1864. Depicts Union forces during the Battle of Vicksburg, May 18-July 4, 1863. At the bottom of the image Union soliders rest under cover of a small shelter, above them soliders continue to fire upon Vicksburg. Engraved from the original painting by Alonzo Chappel in possession of the publishers at time of engraving. Engraver unknown.
