Writes of his arrest, "I received last night on my return the paper containing General Lee's remarks in regard to the subject of my arrest. Am I to understand that I am released from arrest and resume my command without any further delay? With Alexander Pendleton endorsement signed on verso, "Having been released from arrest by command of Genl. Lee Maj. Ge. Early will resume his sword & command. By orders of Lt. Gen. Ewell."
