Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed as Col., 3rd US Col Cavalry. CDV, Barr & Young, Vicksburg imprint. Osband entered service as became colonel of the newly organized 3rd U.S. Colored Cavalry in February, 1864. He was brevetted brigadier general for "gallant and meritorious service" in October, 1864.
