Received a few lines from Banks through them recently. Took him a few readings to "make head or tail of it." Wishes they had sent him the portfolio. Glad to have received the tobacco, socks, handkerchiefs, towels, and straps in the mail. The tobacco was a "godsend." Stockings are "just what I wanted." Is now "about all right" with clothes again. Thanks Aunt Caroline for her gift. Just finished the regular Sunday morning inspection. Had part of the regulations of the army read to them. With respect to his superiors, he notices that "they are very particular to read to us for what we shall be punished by never what they can be punished for." Most soldiers do not know that anyone can read the regulations. A general rode through camp and saw some officers playing with their subordinates and made sure to remind them that an officer should be a strict presence around camp. Many soldiers live better at camp than they did at home. Felt a little ill; went to the hospital, but still had a headache even after they gave him some medication. "Thought I was going to have a fever." One of the men in the company offered to go on guard duty in his place, but the officers made him "do his duty." Wants to see them as much as they want to see him, but knows that they must both wait until their time is up.
