One letter from Leonard Eugene Graeff to Susan Prowell Graeff and Raymond James Graeff dated November 4, 1944. He mentions listening to President Roosevelt’s speech from Boston being rebroadcast. He received the clippings, cookies, peanuts and cakes Susan sent. He also received a box of Hard candy from the church. He really appreciated the comics, as he hasn’t seen any since he started Kitchen Police duty. He mentions John Shadow’s death. He also received letters from June Walter and Robert Winemiller. Robert wrote on October 14, and it took 20 days to get to Leonard. Robert mentioned shelling, rifle fire, machine gun fire, mortars, and airplane strafing. He also mentions how much he wants Coca-Cola and date at home. Robert mentions being closer to Germany, and that the closer they get the less happy people are to see them. His division has been in five major battles. Robert also mentioned that the news is good, but he believes it won’t be over for a while. He and other soldiers are afraid they’ll have to go to the South Pacific after it’s over in Germany. June is away in college and seemed to be homesick. Dot Runk mentioned going to a lot of U.S.O. dances. Leonard comments that all unrated men now must do their own laundry, but remarks that he shouldn’t complain after hearing about Robert Winemiller and John Shadow. His tasks at the mess hall have changed and he is now putting out condiments and cleaning them up after everyone eats. It is easier than before and he gets done sooner. He also mentions giving some of his old suits away.
