At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One account dated January 1842 entitled, "Account of Sale of the Personal Property of Wm. G. Dekle Deceased and Hire of Negroes." Lists includes named and unnamed enslaved people, amount they were sold for and to who they were sold to, as well as household items.

Enslaved peoples were: Willis for 4 1/2 months to Edward Dekle, Ezekiel to Thomas Williams for 4 1/2 months.
