Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The caption underneath this print describes Lincoln as the Republican candidate for sixteenth President of the United States. A red drapery serves as a backdrop for this oval-shaped print. Published by Currier & Ives. Note along the bottom of the image reads "Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1860 by Currier & Ives, in the Clerks Office of the District Court for the Southern District of N.Y."

Nathaniel Currier operated several printing agencies before becoming business partners with James Merritt Ives. Former names of Currier's printing businesses include Currier & Stodart, and N. Currier, Lithographer. Lincoln was nominated as the Republican candidate for President in May 1860.
