Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Map of North and South Carolina in an early period of settlement. Includes an inset of the area around Charleston, which locates plantations. This copy has a pencil note "1740" in margin, but no evidence for dating. In fact, this map remained current without change in French atlases for more than half a century. Borders are colored in pink, yellow, and green. Reference number: Cumming 120, Phillips 3448.
