What is the Affiliate School Program? How much does it cost?
Initially created with the support of a “We the People” Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2009, the program is free for all K-12 teachers, students, and schools. It is designed to connect them to educational programs and resources that promote the teaching and learning of American history.
Why should my school join the Affiliate School Program?
The program offers:
- UNLIMITED access to the Gilder Lehrman Collection’s catalog of more than 75,000 primary sources and classroom resources
- FREE subscription to the online journal History Now through our website
- EXCLUSIVE eligibility for our highly popular Teacher Seminars
- FREE classroom-ready books, posters, and other materials that are distributed monthly, with no caps on the number of requests
- EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNTS on Self-Paced Courses and other professional development opportunities, including our How Did We Get Here? series
- EXCLUSIVE opportunities to nominate students for scholarships with colleges and universities across the country
What is expected of a school once it becomes an Affiliate School?
We may periodically ask for direct feedback from Affiliate School Program members to evaluate history education needs and track and improve the effectiveness of the program.
REGISTRATION
How do I register? How long does the registration process take?
To register, complete the Affiliate School registration form. The registration should take no more than five minutes to complete. Submitted forms are reviewed daily.
How long will it take to process my registration form?
Registration forms are reviewed by our education department, and schools are accepted on a daily basis. Once accepted into the program, a school receives a welcome email from affiliate@gilderlehrman.org.
ELIGIBILITY
Can districts or consortia join the Affiliate School Program?
We encourage school districts and consortia to make information about the program available to their schools, but each school must register individually. A district or organization can choose to assign one main point of contact to serve as the Affiliate School advisor for their schools.
Can home schools join the Affiliate School Program?
Homeschool co-ops are eligible to register to the program but individual homeschoolers are not eligible. Note that homeschool parents are eligible for free Parent memberships, which offer the same website access as Affiliate School teachers.
BENEFITS
My school has been accepted into the Affiliate School Program. How do I access the website?
Once your school’s registration has been processed, teachers and students can create an account on the Gilder Lehrman website by visiting gilderlehrman.org/register. Teachers will have to identify their school to receive Affiliate School access to the site.
What is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, and how can I use it as an Affiliate School member?
The Gilder Lehrman Collection contains more than 75,000 documents addressing the political and social history of the United States. The Collection’s holdings include handwritten letters, diaries, maps, photographs, printed books, and pamphlets ranging from 1493 through modern times. Teachers and students from Affiliate Schools can request free electronic copies of Gilder Lehrman Collection documents from the reference librarian at reference@gilderlehrman.org.
How do I register for Teacher Seminars?
Please complete the Teacher Seminar registration, which will reopen in Spring 2022. A complete listing of seminars, deadlines, and the registration form can be found in the Teacher Seminars section of our site.
