At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Floretia Mitchell from Wallace Mitchwll dated Camp Curtin, September 30. The front page of the letter is a printed song, "The Union Soldiers' Song." Letter pertains to conditions of the camp and health of the soldiers. He describes an accident where a man smashed his hand in or about the cars and the surgeon had to remove a finger.
