Alysha Butler

Alysha Butler is a social studies teacher at McKinley Technology High School in the District of Columbia. She has a unique gift for combining history, civics, and civics activism in her teaching. Butler has served as a department chair and instructional coach, has organized field trips to Mount Vernon for her students, and was a 2019 GrantEd Recipient, which provided funds for her students to clean up the oldest African American cemetery in the District of Columbia. She guided her students through the Hamilton Education Program curriculum and arranged for them to attend Hamilton when the show was in Washington. She is the first African American winner of the National History Teacher of the Year award in its fifteen-year history. Her award-winning career has received extensive coverage by the History Channel, the Wall Street Journal, and other press.
