Scholarly Fellowships

Gilder Lehrman fellowships support research at archives in New York City.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute provides annual short-term research fellowships in the amount of $3000 each to doctoral candidates, college and university faculty at every rank, and independent scholars working in the field of American history. International scholars are eligible to apply. Since 1994, the Gilder Lehrman Institute has awarded a total of 663 fellowships.

This year, three of the ten awards will be granted with special attention to Cold War topics, so preference will be given to applicants in that field.

Please note that the due date for 2020 applications has been changed from Monday, May 11 to Friday, July 31. Upon selection in August, the 2020 Gilder Lehrman Fellows will have two years in which to complete the terms of the award.
