At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Julia Ward Howe published poetry, plays and travel books, as well as many articles. She was active with the Sanitary Commission and, as a result of her work with Union Troops, the poem "Battle Hymn of the Republic" was published first in February 1862 in the Atlantic Monthly.
