Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Expresses his distress at her being hospitalized. Explains that his distress arises mostly from her inability to continue to do her fine work. He also offers his assistance in helping her attain her goal. Typed on White House stationery in green ink with header, The White House Washington. Stationery watermarked Whiting's Woven Linen. One bust engraving of wilson included.

Gardener was born Alice Chenoweth. She was a suffragette and in 1920, Wilson appointed her to the United States Civil Service Commission, the first woman to occupy so high a federal position.
