Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Declines invitation to a celebration of Shakespeare's birthday. Expresses his appreciaton for the works of Shakespeare and writes "[s]urely if English speech supplies the token of united efforts for the good ...we will do well to fittingly honor the name and memory of William Shakespeare."

Parker was an editor who published the writings of President Cleveland.
