Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes a letter from James Buchanan, Secretary of State, to Charles J. Ingersoll, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives. Contains correspondence between A. Calderon de la Barca, envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary of Spain, and John C. Calhoun, Secretary of State before Buchanan. All items pertain to the Amistad.
