At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sumner, a United States Senator from Massachusetts, also asks for "the repeal of all acts for the rendition of fugitive slaves..." Report intended to accompany bill No. 141. Also includes a minority report, submitted 1 March 1864 by Senators John Carlile and Charles R. Buckalew, opposing the repeal of fugitive slave laws. Report no. 24. 38th Congress, 1st session.

Sumner, an ardent abolitionist, was a United States Senator from Massachusetts 1851-1874.
