Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed at the Congressional Globe Office. Removed from previous binding. Contains stab-stitching. Of the Missouri Prohibition, states, "...I believe that we are upon the verge of another era. That era will be the Era of REACTION... But you may pass it here... It may become law. But its effect will be to satisfy all thinking men that no compromises with slavery will stand, except so long as they serve the interests of slavery..."
