At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Paine as prosecutor for the state of Massachusetts. Countersigned by Daniel Parker as the jury foreman and five witnesses. Specifies the jury's charges against Davis in detail. Dated the "Last Tuesday of August." Names penned by Paine, including that of Benjamin Edes, the printer of the June 18, 1776 Massachusetts issue, the one probably forged.

Robert Treat Paine (1731-1814) was a Massachusetts representative at the Conintental Congress. He also served as Attorney General for Massachusetts from 1777-1796 and Judge of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts from 1796-1804.
