Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mifflin, Governor of Pennsylvania, writes to Colonel Biddle, Pennsylvania Quartermaster General, regarding the transportation of President George Washington to Philadelphia. Instructs Biddle to prepare the vessel the New Line, as he wishes "to put the best Foot forward on this occasion."

…Mr Tho Humphreys has just informed me that the Schooner you have engaged is not a proper Vessel for our President - That the large Sloop riggd packet of the New Line is arrived & that you may have her…I anxiously want to put the best Foot forward [struck: I illegible] on this Occasion...
