At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Dear Sir
This letter will be delivered to you by Mr. Pierre Charles François Huger Valsois a young gentleman about to establish himself in America. He will have entered in his name on the Treasury Books of the United States some Stock the kind and amount of which I will mention to you as soon as I know it. You will aid him in receiving the Interest &c: according to the Treasury forms and also in other affairs where your advice may be useful-- I will thank you therefore and for your Attentions advice.
