Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Stoddert, Secretary of the Navy, discusses his [will?] with an unidentified recipient. States "Gordon is so great a Liar, that I conclude merely because he says otherwise, that the [will?] is in good condition." Docket on verso states "Ben Stoddert Philadelphia 14 August 1799." Also docketed below text.

Appointed in 1798, Stoddert was the first Secretary of the Navy.
