Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Williams as Naval Officer of Baltimore. Signed by Samuel Oakford, master of the sloop. Lists all cargo on the Hannah, including olives, raisins, wine, apples, tea, and beer, among other items. Lists the names of persons to whom the items are consigned. States that the cargo was assumed in Philadelphia, and that Oakford has not broken bulk since arriving in Baltimore. Partially printed. Docketed 27 December 1787.

Williams was elected as Naval Officer of Baltimore in 1783, and later served as Baltimore collector of customs.
