Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes about the whereabouts of a captain. Discusses the situation in Washington and remarks, "At present there seems to be but little chance for the Radical democracy ... certain it is, they can't be worse than they have been." Written on blue paper.

Spinner was a United States Representative 1855-1860. He was later appointed by Abraham Lincoln to the post of Treasurer of the United States, 1861-1875.
