Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Quotes himself, "That country, where everyman is the political equal of every other man." Addressed to whom it may concern and signed and dated "F.E. Spinner/aged 85 years/January 21st, 1887."

Spinner was a United States Representative 1855-1860. He was later appointed by Abraham Lincoln to the post of Treasurer of the United States, 1861-1875.
