Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Hollett, a member of the 75th Ohio, to his sister Mary. Written in pencil on patriotic stationery with "Secession Web" envelope, and note on small piece of paper. Discusses fighting in West Virginia. Letter does not list the location from which it was written, but a note on the envelope suggests it might be New Creek Station, Virginia, or present-day Keyser, West Virginia.
