Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Two speeches by Sumner.

Sumner graduated from Harvard Law School in 1834. He lectured and taught law, then was elected to the Senate in 1851, where he was known for his stirring speeches, advocating emancipation and benefits for blacks. He opposed Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction policies and played a strong role in the impeachment trials against the President.
