Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Semmes's working draft of an order that gives instructions on baggage trains, ammunition and pitching tents for the move of the Columbus guard to Camp Montgomery. Possibly a draft as there are cross outs and insertions. By orders of Captain Semmes and Captain Cooper. Written from the headquarters of the Volunteer Battalion, Columbus, Georgia. On blue paper.
