Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses their correspondence and Everett's international travel. Comments on Oxford and mentions Shakespeare. Discusses reading Clarke's travels, possibly referring to Edward Clarke's "Travels in various countries of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Part the first. Russia, Tartary, and Turkey." Also comments on other literary works. Discusses politics, Napoleon's invasion of Russia, and Russian defenses. Adams had been the U.S. minister to St. Petersburg since 1809. Everett had served as his private secretary from 1809 to 1811.
