Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Eliza Trist from James Madison dated New York, October 29. Discusses his travel plans and health. Also mentions a man named John, whom Madison arranged to be placed in the Almhouse (center for the homeless). Mentions Edmund Randolph, William Grayson, and Thomas Jefferson. Trist was the daughter of a woman who ran a Philadelphia boarding house where Madison and Jefferson frequently stayed. Signed "Js. Madison Jr."
