Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Both envelopes held correspondence sent from Gorsuch, Captain and Provost Marshal of the 13th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, to his aunt and uncle in Hamilton, Ohio. One envelope indicates a date of 30 July, though no year is cited. On the other envelope, the date is obscured.
