Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection includes eight letters and envelopes written from Confederate surgeon William T. Hollingsworth to his brother James H. Hollingsworth. The collection includes numerous postal covers and a family genealogy book. The correspondence mentions the Battles of First Bull Run, the duel between the Monitor and the Merrimac (Battle of Hampton), and a detailed personal account of the Battle of Seven Pines. Draft transcripts are available.

William T. Hollingsworth enlisted as a private on 22 June 1861 and was mustered into "D" Co. Georgia 3rd Infantry. On 8 October 1861 he was promoted Assistant Surgeon. He resigned on 13 August 1862.
