Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the pension for the widow of Navy Commander Samuel Larkin. Mentions testimony given on the cause of his death which showed that Larkin contracted the disease while on duty in Africa. Paper watermarked "Joynson/1856." Written during Pierce's presidency and docketed "President Pierce."

Whiting was Commissioner of Pensions.
