Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Appointment of Philip R. Ward to Lieutenant Colonel in the Coast Artillery, beginning May 15, 1917. NOT signed by Wilson. Signed by William Ingraham as Acting Secretary of War. Docketed at top by the Adjutant General, reads "The Adjutant General's Office, Recorded Jul 18 1917". Features a paper seal from the War Office and two detailed patriotic scenes.
