Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Memminger, Secretary of the Confederate Treasury, discusses an attempt to raise funds for the Confederacy (refer to GLC00832.01) with Schley. States that bonds in the form that Schley proposed cannot be issued, due to a recent act passed by the Confederate Congress. Discusses specific details related to domestic and foreign issuance of bonds, as well as their principal and interest. Docketed "For Mr. Washington." Marked as a copy. Schley was a prominent Georgia cotton manufacturer.
